The epitaph of America, on the frieze of the monument refers to William the Conqueror and the invasion of England in 1066 The translation reads: "We, once conquered by William free, the hometown of the winner."

The monument bears the names of men of the Commonwealth who died in 1808 at the Battle of Normandy and do not know the grave.
